Install help needed

We have spent all day trying to get this to work and would really appreciate any help you could give us.

Step 1..Where is the GAC? After Googling this and reading alot it looks as though it is under C:\Windows\assembly.. I copied the BilSimser.SharePoint.Common.dll file there

Step 2.. There is no "Bin" directory under "c:\inetpub\wwwroot" and there are five different Bin directories under "program files"
1. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\50\bin
2. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\bin
3. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\ISAPI\bin
4. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\bin
5. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\ADMIN\1033\bin

Because we have not been able to get the web part to run we have now copied the required DLL files to all of those directories.

Step 3.. There are almost as many web.config files as there are Bin directories. We have copied in the SafeControl entries into most of them

Step 4.. What is a "custom" policy file? After seraching the web for hours we still do not know. We found the medium and minimum security files buried underneath the program files folder and added the info to both of them.

Step 5. Tried IISreset multiple times

Step 6. Imported and deleted the SharePointForums.dwp multiple times. When we click on it inside the Web part Gallery we get a page that says "A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported because it is not registered on this site as safe." When we try to add the webpart to a page we get the same error.

Step 7.. we cannot wait to get here. I cannot say how much we appreciate all of the time and effort you must have put into this application. Hopefully all of this ignorance is not too annoying. Thanks for any help that you can give us Bil.

I have to get to the install page (on the Wiki here) and add more details. My apologies as the install was set for someone who had some knowledge about SharePoint so if you've never editing web.config, etc. then yes, it's a mystery.

Watch for an update on the Wiki here with details for each step and I'll be posting a link from my blog for installations where you need some help.

I've completed the installation guide which has detailed steps. You should be okay if you follow it now and explains things like locating the web.config file and creating a custom security policy file. You can find it on the main page.

I added this as a comment on the help for step 4, but I wasn't sure if it'd ever be seen.

Does the custom policy stuff have to be done at all if your web.config has the trust level set to full?

Lectures on this being bad practice aren't necessary, just asking. :)

If you set the system to Full then no, the policy file isn't needed because you're saying that you're going to trust all code on the system. You'll still need the SafeControl entries though.

And yeah, it's a bad pratice ;)

I have downloaded last released ( and installed, and found that goes to C:\Program Files\WPPackager\{}\,
where it creates one dll file: CSCustomAction.dll, one xml: PackagerFile.xml, and one cab file which contains:
But at the installation STEP 2 there is writen that : "... These are:
BilSimser.SharePoint.Forums.Core.dll ..."
but i could find only: BilSimser.SharePoint.Forums.dll , so where is: BilSimser.SharePoint.Forums.Core.dll ? how can i find it ?
